Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is short for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a proactive, research-based approach to preventing student behavior problems and achieving social and learning goals.

A team of Brisas staff (comprised of support, certified and administrators) received specialized training during the 2011-2012 school year tailored to our school's specific needs with our goal being to be able to better prevent problematic student behaviors school-wide -- in every classroom and in all other school settings. After a year of training and planning, Brisas staff immediately began implementing PBIS and continues full implementation to this day.  The Brisas PBIS Team (aka Climate Committee) meets quarterly to review behavioral data, establish goals based on the Big Five, and monitor the overall positive climate of our campus.

 
There are multiple components of PBIS, such as:
  • Clearly defined behavioral expectations  
  • Teaching desired behaviors/skills
  • Focusing on positive behaviors
  • Changing systems
  • Altering the environment
  • Providing a continuum of supports
  • Functional assessment
  • Data-based decision making

PBIS has been shown to:

  • Reduce office discipline referrals
  • Reduce suspensions
  • Maximize instructional time
  • Maximize administrative time
  • Improve school climate
  • Increase safety
  • Increase student, staff, and parent satisfaction
  • Improve individual students’ behaviors

At Brisas, we have 3 school-wide expectations for students: be respectful, be responsible and be safe.  Students make a “PEACE Promise” to do their best to meet these expectations in all settings every day.  Staff teaches these desired behaviors and reinforces them daily with “PBIS Tickets”.  We always focus on students’ positive behaviors and systematically reward students on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.   Our Climate Committee, with membership from every grade level and special area, meet regularly to assess our school’s climate and make data-based decisions to ensure we are doing everything we can to create a peaceful school environment.
